County of Newell - Fire Ban

The Rural Fire & Emergency Services Coordinator for the County of Newell, in conjunction with County of
Newell Fire Bylaw #1958-19 has upgraded the current Fire Advisory to a “Fire Ban” for the entire County of
Newell due to the following conditions:
• Fire conditions are extreme.
• Wind speeds exceed safe burning conditions at times.
• Lack of sufficient moisture levels to reduce the fire risk.
• Grass conditions in most areas are 100% cured, promoting rapid-fire growth.
A Fire Ban, as stated in the County of Newell Bylaw #1958-19 is defined as no fires are allowed including:
recreational fire pits, fireworks, exploding targets, burning barrels, charcoal briquettes, wood pellet
based fully contained smokers, and sky lanterns.
The following can be operated during a fire ban period: approved gas or propane cooking appliances
and portable propane fire pits.
Fire Guardians will continue to refuse to issue new fire permits until the Fire Ban is lifted. No
exceptions will be allowed.
When the Fire Ban is lifted, after conditions improve for safe burning, all County Residents are reminded that a
signed fire permit is required prior to kindling fires on lands. All permit holders are required to contact your local
Fire Department prior to lighting the fire and follow any and all recommendations/conditions stated on the
permit without exception.
Note: The Fire Ban does not affect/cover the following properties contained within the boundaries of the
County of Newell: City of Brooks, Town of Bassano, Village of Duchess, Village of Rosemary, Provincial Parks
and/or First Nations Reserves.
This Fire Ban will remain in effect until further notice.
