County of Newell - Fire Restriction
Monday, June 2nd, 2025
The Regional Fire Chief for the County of Newell, in conjunction with County of Newell Fire Bylaw #1958-19
has issued “A Fire Restriction” for the entire County of Newell due to the following conditions:
• County of Newell fire apparatus and firefighters have been deployed north to help with the wildfires.
• Lack of sufficient moisture levels, including high vegetation and low fine fuel moisture content.
• Wind speeds exceeding safe burning conditions at times.
• Temperatures contributing to the fire risk.
• The potential for more fires.
A Fire Restriction as stated in the County of Newell Bylaw #1958-19 is defined as: All fires including: low
hazard (family style fireworks), exploding targets, burning barrels, charcoal briquettes, sky lanterns,
and incinerators are not allowed.
The following fires are allowed during a Fire Restriction period:
1. Approved gas or propane cooking appliances;
2. Portable propane fire pits;
3. Recreational fire pits;
4. Campfires burning within designated fire containment units located within approved
campgrounds; and,
5. Wood pellet fully contained smokers.
County of Newell Fire Guardians will now refuse to issue new fire permits until the Fire Restriction is lifted, and
any existing permits are hereby canceled. All existing fires must be extinguished immediately.
No exceptions will be permitted.
When the Fire Restriction is lifted, all County Residents are reminded that a signed fire permit is required
before kindling fires on lands. All permit holders are required to contact their local Fire Department before
lighting the fire and follow all recommendations/conditions stated on the permit without exception.
Note: The Fire Restriction does not affect/cover the following properties contained within the boundaries of the
County of Newell: City of Brooks, Town of Bassano, Village of Duchess, Village of Rosemary, Provincial Parks,
and/or First Nations Reserves.
The Fire Restriction will remain in effect until further notice.
