TITLE: ART & VISUAL DISPLAYS IN THE COUNTY BUILDING

POLICY PURPOSE:
The purpose of this policy is to provide information and guidelines for installing, hanging, and/or
displaying artwork and other visual art items in the County of Newell building.
This policy consists of TWO parts so that each part may be applied separately for the applicable
situation:
Part 1: Public Artist Exhibits – Displays of local artists, artisans, craftspeople, etc.
Part 2: In-house Installations – Items installed/displayed by staff in the County
building.

PART 1: PUBLIC ARTIST EXHIBITS
Goal: To provide information and direction for local artists, artisans, craftspeople, etc. to display
their works in the County building foyer.
Guidelines:
The foyer area of the County building is available for use by local artists, artisans, craftspeople,
etc. to display their works.
Requirements for the exhibitor:
Proposed exhibits shall be by written request to the County of Newell using the attached
form;
Displays will be approved or refused at the discretion of the Reeve and or CAO;
The duration of the exhibit shall be for a minimum of 30 days and a maximum of 60 days;
if an exhibit item(s) is sold during this time, it shall remain on display for the duration of
the exhibit time;
Exhibitors shall provide all materials needed for the display: stands, easels, tables, labels,
and any other item required for the exhibit;
Exhibit items must be freestanding; no items may be hung on walls, windows, columns,
doors, or other vertical or horizontal surfaces in the building;
AVD Committee member(s) or their designate(s) may be requested to provide assistance
with setup and removal of the exhibit.
The County shall not be held liable for any damage to items placed or left by the exhibitor in the
display area.

PART 2: IN-HOUSE DECORATING AND INSTALLATIONS
Goal:
To ensure that seasonal, special event, and other on-going decorating and visual display
opportunities are appropriately recognized and presented to County staff and the public.
To provide guidelines for hanging or installing donated art and visual display items in the
County building.
To provide guidelines for hanging or installing art and visual display items by staff in
personal offices.
To ensure that proper fixtures are used to hang or install art and display items in personal
offices, public areas, and semi-public areas of the County building so that no damage is
sustained to walls and/or other surfaces.
Guidelines:
1. Donated Artwork or Display Items
The intention is to ensure that all donated items are displayed where they may be viewed by
the public. In doing so, no donated work may be installed in personal offices, coffee stations,
staff room, or other spaces that are used primarily or exclusively by staff.
Staff are invited to provide input regarding placement of any art or display item to the CAO.
Donated items will be installed in available spaces based on the following priorities:
First Priority: Public Spaces
Public spaces include the foyer area (from the front door up to the gates that separate the
general public area from the front office staff desks) and Council Chambers.
Installation in these areas will be completed by County maintenance staff.
Second Priority: Semi-Public Spaces;

Semi-public spaces include the north stairs from the foyer to the 2 floor, the mezzanine
that overlooks the foyer, the customer area outside the parts room, and the following
meeting rooms: 111, 154, 156, and 211.
Installation(s) in these areas will be carried out by County maintenance staff.
Third Priority: Semi-Private Spaces;

Semi-private spaces include all 1 and 2 floor hallways, and Council office (166).
Installation(s) in these areas will be carried out by County maintenance staff.
2. Artwork and/or Display Items in Personal Offices
For any display piece that requires making holes in walls, please contact County
maintenance; do not attempt to do this yourself.
For other item(s), use the 3M Command wall hangers, located in the Work Room (145);
instructions for using hangers are on the package.
3. Other Wall Mounted Features:
Any wall mounted features such as a wall map, bulletin board, etc., should be installed by
County maintenance staff to ensure it is properly installed and to limit damage to finished
wall surfaces.
