HomeMy WebLinkAbout2017-09-25 Newsletter - Cassils (West Brooks) - Newsletter 2.pdfThe total capital cost of the project is expected to exceed $35 million, bringing an im- portant source of direct and indirect economic actfvity to the County of Newell and the City of Brooks. The project is expected to be completed in one phase with commercial operatfons com- mencing in late 2018 and con- tfnuing over the next 30 years and beyond. The project will tfe directly into the local FortfsAlberta electrici- ty distributfon grid, benefitting neighbouring businesses, resi- dences, and farming opera- tfons with the use of clean, renewable power during day- tfme periods. The proposed Cassils Solar Pro- ject is a 22.5 megawatt (MW) solar facility, located on ap- proximately 160 acres of pri- vate land in the County of New- ell, Alberta, west of the City of Brooks. The project is estfmated to offset 10,100 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions annually, generatfng enough electricity to power more than 5,900 Alberta homes. About the Cassils Solar Project The proposed project is sited on the west half of Section 4, Township 19, Range 15, Meridian 4 (see detailed map included with this newsletter). We want your input You are receiving this news- letter because you live on or own land near the proposed Cassils Solar Project and we want your input. September 25, 2017 A non-subsidized Prairie Sunlight renewable energy project developed in partnership among Solar Krafte, Belectric and innogy. Cassils Solar Project Attend our 2nd Open House To learn more about the pro- ject and provide input, we invite you to join us at our second community open house: October 3, 2017 Cassils Community Centre 6 to 8 PM Public consultation We want your input to shape our design. In the coming months, we will keep you informed, and con- tfnue to meet with communi- ty members, local govern- ment officials, and local busi- nesses, to ensure that our final design is socially, envi- ronmentally, and economical- ly sustainable. We are contacting you to gather input and address questions or concerns about the project. We are holding the open house to provide additional information about the project. After this initial consultation is complete, we will file an application with the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC). The AUC will review the application through a process in which stakeholders can participate. Clean, renewable power without subsidies Solar Krafte focuses solely on power generatfon in solar rich jurisdictfons, where the price for power is not subsidized, delivering power to consumers at the best price, and without emissions or waste. Through technological advances, and substantfal global manufacturing supply increases, the cost to build a commercial scale solar power plant has dropped dramatfcally over the past few years. What cost us $100 million to build seven years ago, we can build today for $25 million. The solar panels for this project will be mounted on horizontal trackers, which allow the panels to move throughout the day as the sun arcs across the sky. Environment Solar Krafte is committed to mitfgatfng any potentfal nega- tfve environmental impacts, and is currently working with Alberta Environment and Parks to assess the impact of this project on local wildlife and vegetatfon. Cassils Solar Project Visibility The project equipment will have a maximum height of 3 metres. The project will only be visible within prox- imity and will blend in with the horizontal at distances of 100 metres and greater, allowing for minimal visual impact to the surrounding communitfes. Noise The project would result in temporary noise increases during constructfon but would not create any substantfal permanent increase in the ambient noise levels. We com- pleted a noise impact assess- ment as required by the AUC, and the predicted cumulatfve sound levels were determined to be within the regulated, permissible limits. continued from page 1 In much of North America, we can now generate 100% clean, renewable electricity using only sunshine, at the same cost and without subsi- dies, as new electricity generated by burning fossil fuels. The key is scale. By combining scale with the prairies’ intense solar resource, we can produce the most competftfve power possible, and without emissions or waste. Community Benefits Solar Krafte values the long-term benefits of working with the local community. Beyond the clean, renewable power our project will pro- duce for the residents of Alberta, without emissions or waste, the significant property tax revenue from this pro- ject will help alleviate costs of municipal services or infra- structure. Other local economic benefits will include constructfon jobs (more than 270 jobs at the peak of constructfon), long-term operator positfons, and significant, local investment into the hospitality and constructfon services sector.
