COUNTY COUNCIL INTENT
County of Newell Residents
Notice of County Council Intent to Pass Bylaw 2073-24 for the Purpose of
Changing the Number of Councillors and Revising Electoral Division
Boundaries
This notice is issued in accordance with Section 148, 149 and 606 of the Municipal
Government Act. During the March 28, 2024 County Council meeting, 1st reading
was given to Bylaw 2073-24 which if subsequently approved before December
31, 2024, will establish new geographic boundaries for nine (9) electoral divisions
within the County of Newell. After a public hearing held during the April 25, 2024
Council meeting, 2nd reading of the bylaw was approved by Council. The
proposed new boundaries would be in effect for the Oct. 20, 2025 municipal
election. The bylaw and related information is available at the County of Newell
office or on the website.
In accordance with Section 606 of the MGA, Electors of the County of Newell
have the right to petition against the bylaw. The rules for a petition submitted
against the bylaw are outlined in Sections 220 – 226 and Section 231 of the
Municipal Government Act. A valid petition must be signed by at least 10
percent of the population of the County of Newell or 747 electors, and be
submitted to the County of Newell CAO at the County Office within 60 days
after the last date on which the proposed bylaw is advertised.
The deadline for submitting a petition is
July 22, 2024 at 4:30 pm MST.
