MINUTES OF SPECIAL COUNCIL
May 31, 2025
The Special Council Meeting of the County of Newell was held via Microsoft Teams on
Saturday, May 31, 2025 commencing at 8:34 a.m.
The purpose of the meeting was to consider a request from the Alberta Emergency
Management Agency to send fire apparatus and firefighter support staff to assist with the
wildfires in Northern Alberta.

C-187/25 MOVED BY COUNCILLOR AMANDA PHILPOTT that Councillor H. Johnson be
excused from the meeting.

3. ADOPTION OF AGENDA
C-188/25 MOVED BY COUNCILLOR ADENA SKANDERUP that the agenda be adopted as
presented.

4. ALBERTA EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY (AEMA) REQUEST FOR
SUPPORT
The Chief Administrative Officer provided background information on this item. The
Newell Regional Fire Chief responded to questions from Council and provided additional
information.
C-189/25 MOVED BY COUNCILLOR GREG SKRIVER that Council approve the deployment of
County fire personnel and equipment to provide wildfire mutual aid assistance to the
Government of Alberta. Such deployment is contingent on a majority recommendation by
the Regional Fire Chief and Volunteer Fire Chiefs confirming to Administration that
deployment will not unreasonably reduce local fire service capacity and community
safety.
