HomeMy WebLinkAbout2025-07-31 AHS -Boil Water Order - Hamlet of Lake Newell ResortEnvironmental Public Health ORDER OF AN EXECUTIVE OFFICER Boil Water Order To: County of Newell, Hamlet of Lake Newell Resort “the Owner” & Geoff Tiffin, manager of planning, development and engineering services “the Owner” RE: The Drinking Water Supply located in the County of Newell, Alberta and described as: Hamlet of Lake Newell Resort WHEREAS I, an Executive Officer of Alberta Health Services, have received a report about the above noted drinking water supply pursuant to the provisions of the Public Health Act, RSA 2000, c. P- 37, as amended; AND WHEREAS such report disclosed that the following conditions exist in and about the above noted drinking water supply which are or may become injurious or dangerous to the public health or which might hinder in any manner the prevention or suppression of disease, namely: a. On July 31, 2025, the potable water distribution system in the Hamlet of Lake Newell Resort experienced a complete loss of pressure creating a potential for contamination. AND WHEREAS such inspection and/or report disclosed that the following breaches of the Public Health Act Nuisance and General Sanitation Regulation, Alberta Regulation 243/2003 exist in and about the above noted Drinking Water Supply, namely: a. On July 31, 2025, the potable water distribution system in the Hamlet of Lake Newell Resort experienced a complete loss of pressure creating a potential for contamination. This is in contravention of the Nuisance and General Sanitation Regulation Section 11, which states “Where a person provided a source of water that the person intends to be used or realizes or ought to realize will be used by the public for human consumption, the person shall ensure that the water is potable”. AND WHEREAS by virtue of the foregoing, the above noted Drinking Water Supply is hereby declared unfit for human consumption; NOW THEREFORE, I hereby ORDER and DIRECT: 1. That the Owner immediately issues a Boil Water Advisory to all users of the above noted Drinking Water Supply. 2. That the Owner immediately undertake and diligently pursue the completion of the following work in and about the above noted drinking water supply, namely: Order of An Executive Officer – Boil Water Order RE: The Drinking Water Supply located in the County of Newell, Alberta and municipally described as: Lake Newell Resort water system Page 2 of 3 a. Complete the required flushing of the potable water distribution system in accordance with Alberta Environments and Protected Areas (AEPA) requirements and direction. b. That chlorine and turbidity are monitored at sampling points from representative locations throughout the distribution system and are maintained at acceptable levels as required by AEPA. c. That two sets of bacteriological water samples, submitted from representative locations throughout the distribution system, are analyzed by the Provincial Laboratory of Public Health and the results come back satisfactory. 3. The work referred to in paragraph 2 shall commence on July 31, 2025. 4. That, until such time as the work referred to in paragraph 2 is completed to the satisfaction of the undersigned, or an executive officer of Alberta Health Services, that this order shall remain in effect. The above conditions were noted at the time of receipt of the report and may not necessarily reflect all deficiencies. You are advised that further work may be required to ensure full compliance with the Public Health Act and regulations, or to prevent a public health nuisance.
