The County of Newell Declares Agricultural Disaster
On August 10, 2023, the County of Newell Council passed a motion to declare a state of agricultural disaster due to
drought. This declaration was made to draw attention and raise awareness around how this drought will affect our
community this year and in years to come.
Extreme weather conditions are not new to our county and our local producers work hard every year to mitigate the
effects of this; however, low soil moisture, lack of rain, and the intense heat this summer have led to significant
challenges for our local ranchers and farmers. Due to a lack of access to water, the impact of these conditions affects our
pastures, reduces dryland foraging and crop yields.
Our county and province are significant contributors to the national and global agricultural industry and the economic
impact of this drought will be considerable. It is our hope to look ahead at recovery as we make all attempts to support
our local producers during this trying time.
