The adjourned meeting of the Council of the County of Newell No. 4 was held in the County Office at Brooks, Alberta at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 19th, 1954. . . . . . . . . . . Town and Village member of the School Committee Owen Lake, was the only one of the committee present. Secretary - Treasurer H. C. Scammell School Superintendent 0. P. Larson . . . . . . . . . . The matter of the School Teacher Strike was discussed at length and a report in this regard was presented by the School Superintendent. . . . . . . . . . . Moved by Councillor Ockey that the Council accept the Arbitration Award, ani settle the Teachers Strike Motion Lost . . . . . . . . . . Moved by Councillor Plumer, that application be made to the Department of Education for the necessary correspindence courses. Carried . . . . . . . . . . Moved by Councillor Plumer, that the local Home and School Associations be approached requesting assistance in providing supervisors and or Teachers for the next school year. Carried . . . . . . . . . . Moved by Councillor Ockey, that the architect Firm of Messrs. Mitchell and Meech, Lethbridge, be consulted and invited to attend a meeting of the School Committee, with a view to having a school built at Duchess in line with our ability to pay. Moved by Councillor Plumer, that no payment be made to any teachers for the months of July and August 1954, pending the settlement of the Teachers Strike. Carried . . . . . . . . . . Moved by Councillor Lokier, that three of the busts recently purchased be used at Rolling Hills for vanning school children. Carried .......... Moved by Councillor Waraksa, that the following rates be approved for the vanning of children by private van in the Tilley District G. Srolson 13.00 per day of 52 miles, 36 pass. ven H.E. Hankel 11.00 per day of 42 miles, 12 pass. ven J. Korithoski lo.00 per day of 38 miles, 12 pass. vEn to be paid for actual travelling only. Carried . . . . . . . ... . Moved by Councillor Arrison, that a circular letter be sent to all School Divisions asking them, that if it is at all possible, they shai l not hire any of the former teachers of the County of Newell Staff, who were in our employ during the recent strike action. Gray ditor of the Farm and Ranch Review be invited to attend a meeting of the School Committee with a view to having full publicity given to the Countys position in the Teachers strike. Moved by Councillor Waraksa, that permission be given to M. Glen StanfoYd to mail a copy of the J "E.I.D. News" bulletin to each ratepayer in the County. Carried . . . . . . . . . . Moved by Councillor McAleese, that an overexpenditure of 4500.00 be authorized in Capital Buildings Account to permit the purchase of the Hankel House and Lot in the Village of Tilley. Carried GA,,Sn ,c+ - 3 - The secretary advised that Standard Gravel and Surfacing Co. intend to appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada. . . . . . . . . . . Copies of a letter from Smith, Clement, Parlee and Whittaker legal advisors of the Alberta School Trustees Issn. were given to all members and the answers to the Countys questions .re the Teachers Strike were discussed. . . . . . . . . . . A letter from the Department of Agriculture with regard to the acquiring of school reservation in the Town of Brooks was left to the Secretary to deal with. Adjourned at 1.00 POM.
