TITLE: SHELTERBELT PROGRAM

POLICY PURPOSE:
This policy establishes the guidelines for shelterbelt plantings by the Agricultural Services
Department.

POLICY GUIDELINES:
Landowner Trees
1. Agricultural Services (AS) will partner with the Eastern irrigation District (EID) and their
Partners in Habitat Development (PHD) program to help ratepayers plan, organize, order
and plant shelterbelts.
2. The EID will be responsible to plan and order materials for the plantings.
3. AS will provide labour for tree planting, applying mulch fabric and shelterbelt maintenance
4. The Environmental Services Supervisor will provide oversight on the maintenance of the
planting sites AS is designated to maintain.
5. AS will provide the County Tree Planter(s) or the County Mulch applicator as needed.
6. Only applicants that are planting a shelterbelt that will be used to increase biodiversity,
provide wildlife habitat, limit soil erosion, and/or protect livestock will be eligible.
7. Community projects will be evaluated and approved on a case-by-case basis by the Director
of Agricultural Services and the Land Administrator – Habitat, Wildlife and Access
Municipal Services Trees
1. Agricultural Services staff will procure trees for replacement on Municipal Services projects.
2. Municipal Services staff will submit a request that will state:
a. the location,
b. the species of trees needing to be replaced,
c. a contact number of the landowner involved, and
d. a time frame for when the works are to be completed.
3. All work will be carried out by Agricultural Services staff for the replacement of trees on
Municipal Services projects.
