TITLE: GRASS SEEDING

POLICY PURPOSE:
The purpose of this policy is to facilitate the rehabilitation of vegetation on sites associated with
county programs.

POLICY GUIDELINES:
1. Grass seeding will be an ongoing program carried out in conjunction with other County of
Newell Departments.
2. Grass seeding will be completed in the fall, weather permitting, after soil temperatures
drop below five degrees Celsius.
3. Locations requiring seeding will be forwarded to the Director of Agricultural Services by
September 15 of each year.
4. Locations to be seeded will be leveled and free of rocks and excessive debris before
Agricultural Services seeds the area.
5. County Roadside seed mix will include the use of 60% Crested wheat, 25% Creeping Red
Fescue and 15% Sheep fescue and will be seeded at a target rate of 20 lbs per acre using
a drill and 25 lbs per acre using broadcast equipment.
6. All seed will be accompanied by a certificate of analysis and be free from noxious and
prohibited noxious weeds as specified in the Weed Control Act and by local bylaw.
7. The Director of Agricultural Services may vary seeding date or requirements as
circumstances warrant.
